Shelby Township, Michigan, December 15, 2020 – I am pleased to announce that on December 15, 2020, I was unanimously appointed to the Solid Waste and Recycling committee (SWARC) as the Shelby Township Board Liaison. Solid waste and recycling may not sound “glamorous,” but we all depend on our garbage pick up and recycling days to keep our homes and yards clean!
The SWARC’s main purpose is to inform the Township on solid waste removal, recycling opportunities, and educate residents on how to dispose of hazardous waste (paint, batteries, electronics, and other non-bio-degradable devices and items we all have at home). One of the most popular events held by SWARC each year is Recycling in the Park, which allows community members to recycle many of those home items that aren't easily disposed of. These items include pesticides, herbicides, oil, gasoline, antifreeze, paint thinner, smoke detectors, car batteries, household batteries, cleaners, compact fluorescent, LED, and fluorescent bulbs, aerosol, mercury-containing devices, chlorine, oil-based, and latex paint. Eyeglasses and medications are also accepted. Electronics are not be accepted - a specific electronics recycling day is scheduled on another day.
I am sure a lot of us have spent some time cleaning out our garages, closets, and basements during the 2020 lockdown! I am looking forward to recycling many of the items I found while “Corona-cleaning.” I am using the Shelby Township Recycling Tips Sheet.
In its efforts to inform and educate, SWARC posts information on their page on the Township website (link) and hosts events during the year. Check out the website and read more about the items eligible for collection, dates, times, and other useful information.
I am proud to work with a dedicated group of people to keep our community safe, clean, and educated on the various waste removal and recycling services available. I am committed to maintaining a clean Shelby Township!
