Early in Person Voting: What You Need to Know

Lucia DiCicco

Michigan voters are entitled to vote early and in person at an early voting location prior to Election Day. Beginning with the presidential primary in February 2024, early voting is offered for all statewide and federal elections.

When does Early Voting Start?

All Macomb County voters have the opportunity to participate in Early Voting before the August 6, 2024 Primary Election. In Shelby Township, Early Voting begins Saturday, July 27th, and ends on Sunday, August 4th. No Voting is available on Monday, August 5th. Voting is available on Election Day, Tuesday, August 6th, from 7AM to 8PM at your usual polling station.

If you want to learn more about early voting and have any questions about the election, visit the Macomb County Clerk's Page for election information.

What are the Differences Between In-Person Early Voting and Absentee Voting?

Both methods of voting, early in-person voting, and absentee voting, allow voters to cast their ballots before Election Day. Nonetheless, there are distinct variations between the two voting methods.

During early voting, voters can cast their ballots similarly to how they would at a polling place on Election Day. Voters receive a ballot and can personally insert it into the tabulator at their early voting location.

With absentee voting, voters can request a ballot by mail or in person at their local clerk’s office. They can complete their absentee ballot at home or at the clerk’s office and then submit it in an envelope by mail, in person, or through a drop box. Once the local clerk receives the absentee ballot, it is processed and tabulated.

Absentee voters also have the option to "spoil" their ballot, meaning they can change their vote after submitting it.
